OVERVIEW:

Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp is situated in the remote Palmwag Concession. It offers activities such as rhino treks and nature walks within an adventurous setting.

Desert Rhino Camp is listed in the impressive portfolio of Wilderness. This company, our partner, is a world leader in conservation and hospitality, and all its properties are situated in some of the wildest places on Planet Earth. This camp is no exception, and a stay here might just be the ultimate experience for travellers seeking the elusive desert rhino! Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, and the camp is open all year round.

WILDERNESS DESERT RHINO CAMP LOCATION & ACCESS:

Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp is situated in the 450,000-hectare Palmwag Concession within Namibia’s Damaraland. This is an area of vast sands and rocky rolling hills, something of a dreamscape for the keen photographers among us. The closest major airport is Hosea Kutako International, Windhoek – from here, it’s possible to take a charter flight into camp.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT WILDERNESS DESERT RHINO CAMP:

Guest accommodation consists of just six tents. Contemporary in style, these are made out of canvas and stone. Each is made up of a tented suite in effect – a stone construction beneath sweeping white canvas. Three stone steps lead up to an external seating area, which has a couple of chairs and tables. This area is perfect for relaxing and enjoying spectacular views over the concession! Entering through glass doors, you’ll find a sumptuous bedroom, featuring king-size bed, bedside stands, end-of-bed seating, and a wonderful rhino artwork. There’s a ceiling fan too, and each suite offers plenty of other amenities to ensure you have a comfortable stay. Views from the bedroom are amazing too.

The communal spaces at Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp are just as comfy and stylish as the suite accommodation. The main feature is a large building also made out of canvas and stone, positioned on a wide deck incorporating various seating areas. Inside, there are lounge and dining areas, including a welcoming bar. And there’s even a swimming pool! Wi-Fi is available.

WILDERNESS DESERT RHINO CAMP ACTIVITIES:

  • Rhino trekking

    – Wilderness has partnered with three local community conservancies as well as Save the Rhino Trust Namibia to defend, preserve, and expand the habitat of the desert rhino. Treks from camp involve tracking the beautiful beasts on foot and in a vehicle, to learn all about them and their astonishing surroundings. And at the end of a day in the desert, you’ll return to camp to sit around the fire-pit under starry skies, reminiscing about your magical moments with the rhinos.
  • Nature drives

    – This activity is great for checking out all the nature of Palmwag, not just the rhinos but also the elephants and even lions! You’ll be accompanied by a highly knowledgeable guide, able to answer all your questions about the area. Sprawling saltpans... dramatic dunes... beautiful beaches... there’s so much to see here.
  • Night drives

You can also head out at night, when all the big predators come alive. It’s always an unforgettable experience, watching what goes on in the dark of the night! You might see porcupines, genets, civets, bush-babies, and occasionally a larger predator with its prey. Night drives here tend to be an add-on post sundowners, rather than a middle-of-the-night excursion.
  • Nature trails

Anyone interested in taking a particularly close look at the smaller lives of the concession will love this activity. Again, you’ll head out with a knowledgeable guide, with the aim of scrutinising the local insects, plants, and birds. It’s a compelling change of pace, well worth fitting into your time here.
  • Stargazing

No trip to this part of Namibia would be complete without at least one evening spent staring up at those awe-inspiring night skies! For more information about this activity, or about anything else to do with staying at Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp, please contact a member of the YZ team.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course

**Walking with rhino in Namibia is one of Africa's finest walking experiences. However, our clients should also know that the guides here carry no firearms, something you need to be aware of when booking this activity.
