OVERVIEW:

For self-catering accommodation in Sossusvlei, Desert Camp comes highly recommended. And there is the added draw of activities and dining at Sossusvlei Lodge! A fab, family-friendly option, earning a big thumbs-up from YZ. As Desert Camp is set up to provide a base for travellers who like looking after themselves, service here is geared towards self-driving and self-catering. However, if you have something special in mind – such as a pre-booked meal in your own room, advice on a nature walk, or how to book onto a guided game drive – staff are happy to help you! Families with children of all ages are welcome here and access for disabled people is possible on request – the accommodation is suitably spacious for wheelchairs.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Situated only 5km from the Sesriem entrance gate in south-west Namibia, this gorgeous camp has long been a favourite of travellers to South Africa, who drive over the border to experience all the wonder of Namibia’s national parks! The area is also popular with wildlife photographers, due to the opportunities it presents to capture some truly mesmerising scenes. And if you love nature, this is the spot to beat all others in Namibia!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT DESERT CAMP:

As Desert Camp is aimed at guests who prefer to look after themselves, the communal areas are fairly modest. However, the overall standard is great! A cluster of tents includes a welcoming reception area, where you can buy fire wood and ice from the friendly staff. The open-sided bar has tree logs for furniture, offering a relaxing space for drinking, getting to know your fellow guests, and watching some big-screen TV! Adjacent to the bar, there is a swimming pool – this is ideal for further relaxation and cooling off in the afternoon sun, as well as admiring exquisite views of the surrounding desert. The communal areas also include two boma – here, guests can sit together around an open fire pit, exchanging safari stories. The boma have a space for preparing meals too, as well as washing-up facilities and a small dining area. And just 5km from camp, for all other needs, Sossus Oasis has a fuel station, a utility shop and an internet café.

Desert Camp’s guest accommodation consists of 20 stone-and-canvas self-catering units, all with vehicle access. The interiors feel welcoming and humble. Each unit has twin beds and a sleeper couch, perfect for families or small groups, and an en-suite bathroom. There is also a kitchenette with a hob, a fridge and a washing-up area, while kitchen utensils are available from reception. A small dining area on a veranda completes the accommodation, so you have everything you need for making meals and enjoying some al-fresco dining. Alternatively, you can pre-book a chef to prepare breakfast and dinner in your room! Meal packs can be purchased from reception – and if you fancy eating out in the evening you can book a restaurant table at Sossusvlei Lodge, which is very close to Desert Camp.

ACTIVITIES AT DESERT CAMP:

The main activity from camp is exploring the local area by self-driving or on foot.

  • Desert Camp’s own walking trail provides an excellent introduction. This trail is safe, but visitors are advised to be cautious of the wild animals, especially the snakes and reptiles! There are loads of photo opportunities in this part of the world, and all are truly first rate.
  • With 360-degree views from camp of the vast desert and majestic mountains, keen photographers are spoilt for choice here!
  • Self-drive destinations we recommend include the Sesriem Canyon and, of course, the amazing Sossusvlei dunes – just get in touch for all the details.
  • And a host of further activities is available from Sossusvlei Lodge – guided game drives, hot air balloon safari, scenic flights, quad biking expeditions, archery, bush dinners, and many more!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course
