“Colina Verde is a private beach property that caters towards a market where the overall experience and surroundings are key; where service is subtle and guests are not simply looking for five star opulence. It's a wonderfully well run, private property where you'll relax with the people serving you, where you will truly really feel at home. A fantastic little place.”

OVERVIEW:

If you’re looking for an exclusive-use beach property away from the crowds, this family-run retreat, complete with private chef, may be ideal. Colina Verde is an understated, luxury home that can house 6 to 18 guests, with seven rooms all decorated in their own charming style. Wonderful management, excellent food, and an impressive list of activities make it a great place for families. It’s also beautifully positioned on the remote Machangulo Peninsula in southern Mozambique and has 360-degree vistas out across the dune forest and the Indian Ocean. Wake up to panoramic views and seasonal humpback whales leaping from the water as you have your morning coffee! There is nothing ‘resorty’ about Colina Verde – you will feel like you’ve found a remote piece of beach paradise, a home away from home.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Set amid dune forests, mangroves, and inland freshwater lakes, the location of Colina Verde is spectacular and there are various ways to arrive! The helicopter flight takes approximately 15 minutes from Maputo International Airport, and you’ll enjoy an epic entrance and amazing views as you cross the Bay of Maputo. The light aircraft option is a 25-minute flight to Machangulo airstrip, followed by a 30-minute drive to the property. Boat transfer is often best for larger groups – it’s a quick taxi to the harbour and then 75 minutes speeding across the bay, passing Inhaca Island as you arrive at the tip of the peninsula. It’s also possible to road transfer the whole way, but you need to be ready for a heavy 4x4 experience as the roads are not great.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT COLINA VERDE:

Each of the seven bedrooms is decorated in its own inimitable style and named after wildlife you might see on your trip. There may be a scramble for the Elephant room with its great ocean views, but all of the rooms are charming, well appointed, have their own unique style with local handmade artefacts present throughout – and most boast enormous free-standing baths and balconies. Homely and cosy is the ambiance!

The large oval swimming pool is the central point of the villa, an excellent space for everyone to enjoy dining and sundowners, as well as relaxing in the hot tub and shaded bar area. Your personal chef will use local ingredients and vegetables from Colina’s own garden to prepare stunning feasts, and there are numerous spots around the property for dining al fresco with great views.

Facilities include a tennis court, a pool table, table tennis, a games room well stocked with board games, massage room, a well-equipped gym, and a space for yoga and meditation (staff can arrange for a yoga teacher, but please mention this when booking).

ACTIVITIES AT COLINA VERDE:

There’s lots to get up to in Mozambique! Some of the activities below come at additional cost, so please chat with one of our experts to find out what is included with the house.

  • Tennis

    - There’s a lovely court in the forest, complete with rackets, balls, and even a ball machine. Just don’t hit it over the fence!
  • Sandboarding

    - Yes, this is a thing! As large dunes line the coast, you can strap onto one of the property’s custom-made boards and try your luck surfing across the sand.
  • Deep-sea fishing and whale watching

    - The fishing around Machangulo is excellent. Expert guide Graham will take you out and show you the best spots. Saltwater fly fishing is available too. The fishing protocol here is catch and release. From June to October, the humpback whales are in town – you can see them from the decking of Colina, or head out on a boat for a closer look.
  • Snorkelling, kayaking, fat bikes

    - Take a trip out and be shown the best places for coral, or take a meander yourself in a kayak through the mangroves, or round Inhaca island. ‘Fat bikes’ are bicycles with extra-large tyres so you can cycle on the beach.
  • Village tours

    - Head out to the local village and see the school and clinic. You can also enjoy a sundowner on the jetty as the local boats come in, and watch the world go by.
  • Turtle monitoring

    - From November to January, endangered female loggerhead and leatherback turtles return to the beaches of Machangulo to lay their eggs in the sand. If you get lucky, you can see this beautiful event.
