Malawi in March

The final month of green season, March is also the rainiest month in the Lake Malawi region – conditions are still pretty stifling too.

What's the weather going to be like in Malawi in March?

  • Both daytime and night-time temperatures are very high
  • March is Lake Malawi’s wettest month of the year
  • It’s still very hot, and humid too
  • We recommend packing your rainwear, alongside lots of cool layers
  • In the north of the country, the rains linger towards the month’s end.

What are the highlights of visiting Malawi in March?

  • Properties around Lake Malawi that were closed due to heavy rain can re-open towards the end of the month, depending on conditions
  • March is fab for birders, as migratory birds start to stretch their wings in preparation for their long flights back to the Northern Hemisphere
  • Many flowers are still in bloom
  • If you’re combining Malawi and Zambia, the latter destination offers super-lush scenery, boating and walking safaris, and a lot of young wildlife to admire.

Any lowlights?

  • A lot of Malawi’s lake lodges are closed, and it isn’t peak season for lake activities
  • Conditions can feel humid before the rains move away
  • Where the rains linger, they can feel relentless
  • It’s hard to avoid the mosquitoes
  • In Zambia, rains can continue to hinder safari activities, and some access roads are flooded so camps and lodges stay closed.
