"One of the best bases from which to visit Amboseli, Tortilis is a peaceful permanent tented camp nestled within a private corner of the park."

OVERVIEW:

Tortilis Camp is one of 15 camps, lodges, and hotels listed in the superb Elewana Collection, which spans Kenya, Tanzania, and the idyllic island of Zanzibar. The camp has received numerous awards from the likes of Ecotourism Kenya and Good Safari Guide, in addition to a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence! Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, and a laundry service. The camp is open all year round.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is accessed via 45 minutes’ road transfer from Amboseli Airport. It has a fabulous location amidst woodland just outside the national park, with a backdrop of majestic Mount Kilimanjaro!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT TORTILIS CAMP AMBOSELI:

Guest accommodation consists of 16 standard tents, one family tent, and one private house. These are dotted around the camp’s well-kept grounds. Each standard tent has canvas walls and ceiling, wooden floors, and a stone veranda, all in the shade provided by a thatched roof. The veranda is set with a couple of safari chairs and a small table, and it’s a great spot for enjoying amazing views! Entering the tent, you’ll find a double bed or twin beds, elegant lighting just above the bed/s, a storage trunk, and a couple of brightly patterned floor rugs. The en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, washbasin with mirror over, and walk-in shower. Tortilis’ family tent benefits from all the features of the standard option, in addition to an en suite twin bedroom and a swimming pool shared with guests of the camp’s private house. Finally, the private house itself offers one en-suite double bedroom, one en-suite triple bedroom, a generously proportioned living and dining room with veranda, and pool access.

Tortilis Camp’s communal structure is made out of timber, stone, and thatch, and it’s approached from the guest tents and house along neat pathways. The large lounge contains a medley of well-cushioned wood-framed chairs and leather pouffes around coffee tables and classic explorer’s chests, as well as the bar with its line of stools and friendly atmosphere! Adjacent to this space is the dining area, featuring leather-back upright chairs, chic tables, and some wonderful wildlife artwork. The structure is open fronted, so guests can relax and dine while marvelling at views that, in clear conditions, include Mount Kilimanjaro! The camp also offers a variety of spa treatments, such as massages and mani-pedis. From the main building, another well-marked path leads down to a fire-pit with safari chairs and cushioned stone seating – the perfect place for pre-dinner drinks and swapping safari stories. And there’s a spacious swimming pool in the shade of palm trees and the Acacia tortilis after which the camp is named. In the pool area, you’ll enjoy inviting sunloungers, board games, bar service, and sightings of some brilliant birdlife!

ACTIVITIES AT TORTILIS CAMP AMBOSELI:

An exhilarating assortment of activities is available here, as follows:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - Drives take place during morning and afternoon, within both the camp’s private concession and Amboseli National Park. Covering over 500 square kilometres in total, both areas are characterised by savanna, woodlands, and water sources supporting a wealth of wildlife! Four of the Big Five live here – lion, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. Elephant numbers are particularly impressive, and you’ll also see numerous smaller predators and herbivores.
  • Guided walks

    - Walks are enjoyed in the presence of experienced local Maasai, all keen to pass on their incredible knowledge of the region. You’ll learn about plants, insects, and even the Maasai way of life! This activity is often a good opportunity to do a little birding too – the Amboseli area boasts over 400 bird species.
  • Maasai cultural experiences

    - Anyone interested in the Maasai culture will really enjoy taking a trip to a local homestead. Here, you can look around the cattle-dung-and-grass huts termed manyattas, and you can purchase a few craft items.
  • Safari bush dining

    - Camp staff are happy to arrange bush breakfasts and sundowners for you. Food is prepared using ingredients from Tortilis’s own kitchen gardens, so it’s super-fresh!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

**Although Elewana offers walking safaris, these are operated without firearms and take place in big game areas. So we don't recommend our clients go on these safari walks.
