"Rekero is an old industry favourite and another property located in the thumping heart of the Maasai Mara's best game-viewing area. High prices for this area, but a really great little camp."

OVERVIEW:

Rekero has a fine reputation as a small authentic camp in one of the Mara’s best game-viewing areas! It is operated by Asilia Africa, a company that is passionate about making a difference, preserving natural habitats while improving the lives of local peoples. Bringing travellers close to the Great Migration while offering an exciting assortment of other activities, Rekero also wins points for its spacious tents and opportunities for children to get stuck in to safari. Just watch out for flying arrows!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

It is situated in the middle of the Maasai Mara National Reserve and approximately 3km from the point where the Talek River joins the Mara River, famous for the Great Migration!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT REKERO CAMP:

The main areas at Rekero comprise a large lounge tent, a smaller mess tent, a gift shop, and tropical gardens leading down to a very stylish river deck. The lounge tent has plenty of colourful sofas and armchairs, coffee tables, and a selection of books, while the mess tent serves as the main dining area, with its long table and rows of dining chairs. Tables are often brought out onto the main lawn for breakfast and lunch – and these are great times to do a bit of birdwatching! The river deck is ideal for enjoying a sundowner while looking out for wildlife. The gift shop sells souvenirs and craft items made by the camp’s staff and their families, in addition to curios made by children living in the poverty-stricken suburbs of Nairobi.

Rekero’s guest accommodation is connected to the main areas via a series of walkways. It consists of seven standard tents and two family tents, all sited among trees along the edge of the Talek River. The family tents are closest to the main areas and are slightly larger, capable of sleeping a maximum of six. All the standard tents are doubles, though they can be reconfigured as triples – the camp is able to accommodate three triples at a time. All tents have a classic safari feel, with décor in shades of green and brown. They are well ventilated and offer adequate privacy. Just outside, there is a lounge area with day-bed, two director’s chairs, and a small table. It is wonderful to spend some time here, just enjoying the views down to the river! Inside, each tent has a writing table and chair, in addition to a big storage trunk. Further storage space is available in the en-suite wash room, which boasts a hanger rail and a clothes chest, plus flush toilet, twin washstand, complimentary toiletries, and classic bucket shower. There is a further washstand on a groundsheet at the front of the tent – staff fill this as required.

*Please be aware that we are unable to book this property for families with young children under the age of 6 years, for safety reasons relating to the balconies/decks/walkways.*

ACTIVITIES AT REKERO CAMP:

Activities at Rekero consist of game drives, walking safaris, local visits – and fun for children in the form of family safaris, lawn games and archery!

  • The game drives take place in the morning, afternoon, or as a full-day excursion including a picnic lunch en route.
  • Rekero is well positioned to offer some seriously good game viewing – not only the migration river crossings, but lots of other spectacular sights featuring all Big Five animals and many other predators and herbivores!
  • The birdlife in the reserve is excellent, with over 470 resident and migrant species. Walking safaris are available too, but it is worth noting that these start an hour’s drive from camp and incur an extra charge.
  • Other activities available at extra cost are hot air ballooning and local visits.
  • However, the family safaris and kids’ activities are included in the price of your stay. Kids get to make their own bow and arrows, then have a go at archery! They can also use the lawn for games such as football – though guests must bring their own equipment.
  • Walks around the camp are also ideal for the little ones. And although night drives and walking safaris are not permitted in the reserve, these activities are available at Rekero’s sister camp Naibosho – we recommend combining a stay at Rekero with a few nights at Naibosho.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
