OVERVIEW:
If you are looking for an eco-camp in the Amboseli area, Porini Amboseli Camp is one of the best options! Less expensive than neighbouring Tortilis Camp, it combines brilliantly with the other Porini camps, such as Porini Mara and Porini Lion Camp. With the exception of only the manager and the head chef, all staff are local Maasai.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
The camp has a lovely location amid large trees in the Selenkay Conservancy, Amboseli National Park.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
The communal area of Porini Amboseli Camp consists of a classic mess tent, a simple canvas structure in the shade of trees. Inside, there is a lounge area with comfy sofas and armchairs around a book-strewn coffee table. On the other side of the tent there is the dining space, containing an assortment of tables surrounded by upright chairs – guests can choose whether to dine together or separately. Further seating is available outside the mess tent – it is common to dine here and also to observe passing wildlife such as mousebirds! The camp also has a fantastic crafts shop, selling items produced by local people. All sales are made on a fixed-price basis and all proceeds go directly to the person who produced the item. The quality of goods is quite something – we recommend stopping in here!
Porini Amboseli Camp’s guest accommodation comprises nine traditional tents. These are made from canvas and set up on the sandy ground, with no decking. All enjoy the shade provided by very large flysheets. A veranda area is furnished with a couple of director’s chairs and a small table. Inside, each tent has one double and one single bed, bedside tables, storage space, hanging space, and a dressing table. The en-suite facilities are accessed via a flap at the back of the tent – these consist of flush toilet, washbasin with mirror, and classic bucket shower! This is basic yet very serviceable accommodation – and there are a few nice touches, such as patterned rugs on the floor and some complimentary toiletries.
ACTIVITIES AT PORINI AMBOSELI CAMP:
Activities from Porini Amboseli are excellent!
- Game drives take place both in the Selenkay Conservancy and in Amboseli National Park, so there is plenty to see during your stay here. Amboseli boasts four of the Big Five – lion, rhino, buffalo, elephant – and it is famous for its elephant interactions! There are ample predators, such as cheetah, spotted hyena and jackals, and loads of herbivores including gazelles, zebra, giraffe, eland and waterbuck. Hippo are often spotted in the region’s Lake Kioko.
- Guided walks are a great way to get to know the area around camp really well – staff have even set up platforms over three local waterholes, yielding amazing photo opportunities!
- Guests can also visit a Maasai village close to camp, ideal for those who have an interest in the local culture. The quality of guiding on game drives and guided walks is seriously impressive! The Maasai guides are very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions.
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
