"Sirikoi may well set the standards for luxury levels in Lewa, but Lewa Wilderness is our most popular property. Privately owned and with a unique style, this lodge offers a charming 'home from home' feel."

OVERVIEW:

Lewa Wilderness Lodge is the home of the Craig family. It started life as a tented camp, approximately three decades ago. Today it’s a very comfortable option, suitable for all types of traveller. The lodge has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor! Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, a selection of activities (see Activities section below), Wi-Fi, and a laundry service. The lodge is closed during April, May, and November every year.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The lodge is accessed via 30 minutes’ road transfer from Lewa Downs Airstrip. It’s situated on the steep slopes of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy’s Western Marania Valley, and it boasts spectacular views all the way down to the valley floor!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT LEWA WILDERNESS LODGE:

There are nine guest cottages, including three double units for group or family use. All are made out of timber, stone, and thatch. The six standard cottages are positioned on the hillside, and each is individually styled. The spacious bedroom features double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a separate seating area with cosy fireplace, and ample storage space. Snug rugs are laid out on the stone floor, while the walls are adorned with some beautiful wildlife artwork. Amazing valley views can be enjoyed through the wood-framed windows! En-suite facilities typically comprise flush toilet, washbasin with mirror over, shower, and bathtub. The larger cottages are found in the grounds, closer to the communal buildings. Each boasts two bedrooms either side of a lounge with bar and welcoming fireplace. All cottages are spaced sufficiently far apart to provide plenty of privacy, and the garden units are nicely screened by various shrubs.

Lewa Wilderness Lodge’s communal spaces are equally well appointed, and also set up within timber, stone, and thatch builds. They include a comfortable lounge, with a medley of sofas, armchairs, and pouffes around coffee tables, homely lighting, and all sorts of artefacts dotted around. The dining room is open sided, so guests can marvel at the scenery while enjoying delectable breakfast and lunch buffets, and more formal dinners. Private dining is available too. The original house contains a lovely library and billiards room, complete with complimentary Wi-Fi. It boasts a veranda too, where afternoon tea is served. Guests also have access to a gym, a tennis court, and a table tennis table. And there’s a very inviting infinity pool, perfect for relaxing in between trips into the conservancy and surrounds!

*For families with children under the age of 6 years, we always request a Garden Room or a room without a balcony for safety reasons.*

ACTIVITIES AT LEWA WILDERNESS LODGE:

The lodge offers an exhilarating range of activities. The following are included in the price of your stay:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - These take place during early morning and late afternoon into evening. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is a wonderful place to explore, with its sprawling savanna, hills and valleys, rivers, and backdrop of majestic Mount Kenya! You can look out for all Big Five – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – in addition to numerous smaller predators and herbivores.
  • Walking safaris

    - Also enjoyed in the presence of a knowledgeable and experienced guide, walks are highly recommended for anyone interested in close scrutiny of the smaller lives within the conservancy. For example, you can focus on the plants, insects, and brilliance of birdlife!
  • Camel safaris

    - Local company Walking Wild provides opportunities for guests to stroll through Lewa and adjacent Maasai community conservation areas in the company of camels. The camels and Maasai guides carry all the fly camp equipment, so you just need to concentrate on admiring the scenery!
  • Horseback safaris

    - The lodge buildings include stables, home to over thirty horses and ponies. You can ride out onto the plains, getting really close to giraffe, zebra, antelopes, baboons, and even ostrich!
  • Village visits

    - This is a must-do for culture fans! You can take trips into local villages to interact with the local people and find out all about their ways of life.
  • Children’s activities

    - The lodge prides itself on being fab for families! Things to do for kids include camel and pony rides, Maasai games, and fishing for crab in freshwater springs.

These activities incur an additional charge:

  • Scenic flights

    - Enjoy Lewa from the air, from a two-passenger plane piloted by former crop-dusting pilot Will Craig. You’ll see plains, forests, and huge herds of game!
  • Forest walks

    - Head to nearby Ngare Ndare Forest, for treetop canopy walks and swimming at the base of a dramatic waterfall! A picnic lunch is included.
  • Further village visits, fly camping, and more!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
