"Governors' Private is a camp reserved for private groups only. With eight tents, it's large enough to entertain a good-size group whilst also small enough to provide an intimate feel. Great game area, good guiding also... a fair price overall."

OVERVIEW:

Governors’ Private Camp is sister camp to the much larger Governors’ Camp. The exclusive feel of Governors’ Private echoes in the attentive approach of all staff, whether on safari or back at camp.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Situated in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Governors’ Private is set in the midst of forest on the banks of the Mara River. Quite rightly, does Governors’ Camp Collection describe this camp as the jewel in the Governors’ Camp crown. The site is breathtakingly beautiful, full of trees and grasses stretching as far as the river banks. The forest is home to some brilliant birds such as turaco, trogan and nesting hornbill, while the river shallows accommodate abundant elephant and hippo.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT GOVERNOR'S PRIVATE CAMP:

The communal areas of camp boast amazing views of these sights, as the main tent is open fronted. The lounge has some comfortable seating, while the combined bar and dining area has separate tables. Guests are welcome to eat and drink outdoors, overlooking the river. This is one of the best locations in the reserve!

The guest accommodation at Governors’ Private consists of just eight luxurious tents, dotted among the forest. All are positioned on wooden platforms that incorporate a veranda, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the views! Inside, there is either a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables, a dressing table and chair, and additional seating. All the furniture is wooden and handmade, with a touch of elegance. Soft furnishings comprise snug rugs and colourful bedding. The en-suite facilities are situated at the back of each tent – flush toilet, washbasin, and shower with hot and cold running water. Other features include electric lighting and charging facilities.

The camp takes both individual and group bookings, with group bookings accepted where at least six tents are reserved. In common with Governors’ Il Moran, Governors’ Private has a peaceful feel, but it too uses the bustling Musiara region for game drives! However, there is plenty of wildlife to view in the serene surrounds of camp itself, between activities.

ACTIVITIES AT GOVERNOR'S PRIVATE CAMP:

  • Activities at Governors’ Private are all about the local wildlife. Game drives take place twice daily in the reserve and surrounding areas.
  • There is loads to see in the Maasai Mara! From July to October the reserve witnesses the Great Migration, when wildebeest mass in their thousands on the riverbanks before hurtling across the crocodile-filled waters. And throughout the year, all Big Five animals roam the plains, in addition to such species as cheetah, hyena, wild dog, zebra, antelopes and the lofty Maasai giraffe.
  • Birdlife is seriously impressive too – plenty of raptors, ostrich, waterfowl, and the majestic crowned crane. It is possible to appreciate all this from the air too, on a hot air balloon safari launching from sister camp Little Governors’.
  • Guests who are interested in culture might like to take up the invitation to visit Maasai homestead Mara Rianda, just outside the reserve. A day or overnight trip to the pristine Island of Mfangano on Lake Victoria can also be arranged by helpful staff members!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
