This is an authentic little lodge with a lot to recommend it – not least, the High Tea!
ACCESS & LOCATION:
It is situated on the shores of Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake north-west of Nairobi and forming part of the Great Rift Valley.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
The main areas of camp comprise the colonial-style dining room, complete with antique furniture that once belonged to Joy Adamson, in addition to the museum, full of memorabilia including some of Joy’s paintings. There is also the garden, which contains George Adamson’s Land Rover. George was shot in this vehicle by Somali bandits, while driving from his Kora National Park camp to rescue his assistant and a guest from the bandits’ clutches. Elsamere’s garden, however, is a peaceful place, lovely for enjoying a buffet-style meal, relaxing with a book, or simply taking in the lake surrounds.
Guest accommodation at Elsamere comprises ten rooms, set within four cottages named after Joy Adamson’s animal pals – Pati (rock hyrax), Pippa (cheetah), Penny (leopard) and, of course, Elsa, the famous lioness. Some rooms are doubles, while others are configured as triples or twins. All have comfortable en-suite facilities and a private veranda with views across the lake.
Elsamere offers a range of activities. At the lodge itself, guests can visit the museum and enjoy watching the documentary The Joy Adamson Story, made in 1980. Day visitors are welcomed here too – and the High Tea served in the garden is considered the best in Kenya! Guided nature walks are available for taking in the spectacular sights of Lake Naivasha, including its abundant buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo – and over 400 species of bird.
Boating trips are another wonderful way to get to know this expanse of water, with a stop at Crescent Island Game Park highly recommended! Other places it is possible to visit are Hell’s Gate National Park, Crater Lake, the local geothermal power plant, flower farms, and Lake Oloiden, to see plentiful flocks of flamingo. There is even horse riding, from nearby Sanctuary Farm!
