“A fantastic little characterful lodge within easy reach of Lake Naivasha and overlooking an active waterhole. A great base from which to explore Kenya’s Rift Valley.”

OVERVIEW:

Considered Naivasha’s best-kept secret, Chui Lodge offers very comfortable accommodation in a spectacular location! It’s an excellent option for travellers seeking something special in the Rift Valley region.

Chui Lodge is one of two properties situated within the Oserengoni Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary was established by Hans and June Zwager and their son Peter in 1995, with the joint aim of conserving the area’s wildlife and managing human–wildlife conflicts to enable both local communities and animals to thrive. Chui combines well with a safari in the Maasai Mara or Amboseli National Park – please contact one of our experts to discuss your options! The accommodation at Chui is usually booked on a full-board basis and the lodge is open throughout the year.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The lodge can be accessed via road transfer from Nairobi. It’s situated above the shores of Lake Naivasha, within the Oserengoni Wildlife Sanctuary.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT CHUI LODGE:

Guest accommodation consists of just eight cottages. Constructed using local timber and stone, each features a four-poster king-size bed made out of olive wood, bedside stands and lamps, a writing desk cum dressing table with padded stool or chair, ample storage furniture, and a pleasant seating space with a couple of easy chairs and a cosy log fire. The cottages are individually decorated, with furniture that has been handmade at the wood workshop on site. Interesting artwork adorns the walls, while the wooden floor is laid with a few patterned rugs for comfort. The en-suite washroom is accessed through a door to one side of the main room, and it contains a flush toilet, washbasin within a generously proportioned storage unit, and walk-in shower. Glass windows throughout every cottage reveal breathtaking vistas over the Rift Valley, and guests can also admire the views from a private veranda.

The majority of communal areas at Chui Lodge are housed in a timber, stone, and thatch lodge building, which is approached from the guest cottages along neat stone pathways through the property’s well-kept garden grounds. Inside, you’ll find the comfortable lounge, featuring well-cushioned wood-framed seating around coffee tables, a cosy fireplace, and the property’s well-stocked bar. Amber and gold lighting dangles from the ceiling, illuminating a palette that includes browns, reds, and oranges, amidst a number of intriguing antiques. The library and indoor dining room is similarly styled, while the outdoor dining area is positioned on a spacious patio adjacent to the lodge. Here, guests tuck in to delicious international cuisine, while enjoying views of a waterhole just a short distance away. The heated swimming pool is also situated a short distance from the lodge, and it too boasts waterhole views. While taking a refreshing dip, guests often see a few giraffes coming to the waterhole to drink, making for a memorable experience!

ACTIVITIES AT CHUI LODGE:

Chui Lodge provides an enticing assortment of activities, as follows:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - The Oserengoni Wildlife Sanctuary covers over 7,000 hectares of savanna, woodlands, and water sources, and it links with Hell’s Gate National Park and the shores of Lake Naivasha via wildlife corridors. There are over 50 mammal species within the sanctuary, including lion, leopard, serval, Grevy’s zebra, topi, impala, warthog, and lesser galago. Drives usually take place during mid-afternoon, with the option to venture into Hell’s Gate too.
  • Night drives

    - Drives after sunset provide opportunities to observe the nocturnal species of Oserengoni, not least leopard, spotted hyena, and black-backed jackal.
  • Birdwatching

    - The sanctuary is home to over 400 bird species! A few highlights comprise long-crested eagle, Klaas’s cuckoo, black-backed puffback, and spectacular weaver. Take a trip to Lake Naivasha, and you’ll enjoy sights of a multitude of waterbirds, such as flamingo, Goliath heron, and pied kingfisher.
  • Bush walks

    - Walks start out from the lodge in early morning. Also accompanied by a knowledgeable and experienced guide, they’re fantastic for anyone interested in close scrutiny of the sanctuary’s plants, insects, and birdlife.
  • Boating trips

    - You can also explore Lake Naivasha on a boat safari, looking out for all those waterbirds as well as hippos wallowing in the waters and various mammals enjoying a long cool drink on the lake’s banks.
  • Visits to the Oserian Flower Farm

    - Oserian Flowers is the biggest flower producer in Kenya! Join a tour here, and you’ll be amazed by the quantity and variety of roses, carnations, sunflowers, and much more.

*Although Chui Lodge offers walking safaris, these are operated without firearms and take place in big game areas. So we don't recommend our clients go on these safari walks.

**This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
