"Owner-run and -managed, this super-relaxed beachside hotel gives you the best of both worlds – an escape by the sea on Shela Beach, with a cosmopolitan buzzing vibe. It is an institution here on Lamu and we love it."

OVERVIEW:

Yellow Zebra love the Peponi Hotel for its intimate beach-side vibe! It is still run by the family that opened it in 1967 and retains its original charm.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Peponi Hotel is located in Shela village, which is 2 miles from Lamu Town – a World Heritage Site in the south-east corner of Lamu Island – and at one end of the 12km white-sand Shela beach.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT PEPONI HOTEL:

This is a small and personal property, but with a choice of many spectacular settings for eating and drinking – the roof terrace or veranda, beautiful gardens, formal dining room, or cocktails at the locally popular bar. The freshwater swimming pool, with its hammocks and sunbeds, shelters in the lush gardens but is right on the beach. The hotel provides excellent service in a laidback setting – the food is exceptional, with fresh seafood, including giant prawns and sushi, and traditional Swahili-style cooking.

There are 29 en-suite rooms, all with an ocean view as well as overhead fans, mosquito nets and showers (rather than baths). The rooms are divided into suites, superior and standard rooms. Suites are larger and have a private outside area with swing bed.

*Please be aware that we are unable to book this property for families with young children under the age of 6 years, for safety reasons relating to the balconies/decks/walkways.*

**Please be aware that the swimming pool here has no depth markings, so take care before you jump in! **

ACTIVITIES AT PEPONI HOTEL:

Explore Lamu Town, enjoy the water sports, or just relax and take in the beautiful ocean views. Explore the islands and coastline in a traditional dhow – visit the ruins at Takwa or enjoy a sunset cruise. Deep-sea, ocean or hand-line fishing is also possible and there are spectacular opportunities for snorkelling at local coral reefs and the chance of seeing turtles and dolphins. Instructors and equipment are available for a multitude of watersports, from windsurfing, kayaking and sailing to wakeboarding, water skiing and kite surfing. Alternatively, sit back, relax and watch the dhows sail by.
