The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust was established by the late Dr Dame Daphne Sheldrick in 1977, following the death that year of her beloved husband. Founder warden of Tsavo National Park, David had dedicated his life to the protection of the wildlife and landscape of Kenya. During the last 40 years or so, the Trust has enjoyed many successes. These include rehabilitating over 200 orphaned elephants, joining with the Kenya Wildlife Service to form local anti-poaching teams responsible for 2,800 arrests, and introducing over 500,000 Kenya children to wildlife, in a move that will ultimately help educate the country about the importance of its incredible animals. Very sadly, Dame Daphne passed away on 12th April this year, but her legacy is forging forward, stronger than ever.

At Yellow Zebra, we have now arranged more than 90 adoptions of elephants with the Trust on behalf of our clients, and we can arrange for you to foster an elephant too. As well as helping an orphan become rehabilitated, fostering an elephant also gains you entry into the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, where you can meet the elephants that you are helping to support.

YZ co-founder Julian recently visited the elephant orphanage. He experienced a very special visiting hour reserved for foster parents (when the orphans return to the stockades for the evening), met some of the orphans that Yellow Zebra sponsor, and witnessed first hand just how crucial the work at the centre is - see below.
