The next part of this ultimate South Africa family holiday sees you all heading to Hermanus, approximately two hours’ drive from Cape Town. Most famous for offering excellent whale watching from June to October (the best land-based whale watching in the world, apparently!), Hermanus is a relatively small coastal town with a number of bars and restaurants. When the weather is great, the region is lovely, while the water-based safaris are superb at any time of year. Hermanus itself is a good all-year destination and you’ll spend three nights at Mosaic Private Sanctuary, an adventurous property that offers a range of activities that are great for families. Overlooking a lagoon, the Mosaic Sanctuary boasts fantastic views and is well placed for visits to many local and nearby attractions, not least Panthera Africa and Shark Alley.

From Hermanus, you’ll return to Cape Town International Airport and head to Madikwe Game Reserve, where you’ll stay at Lelapa Lodge for three nights. The word Lelapa means ‘family’, and this really is a very family-oriented property. There are no age restrictions and staff do their utmost to ensure everyone feels at home. The communal areas include a very comfortable lounge and dining room, with amazing views over the reserve. There’s also a swimming pool, perfect for splashing about! The family suite category is super-comfy too, featuring cosy wood-burning fireplace, indoor and outdoor showers, and your very own plunge pool. When it comes to activities, Lelapa is pretty special. The property has an eco-house – this is an educational and entertainment centre for kids and anyone with a fascination for the wild world and its inhabitants. Other children’s activities include bush orientation, family safari drives, bug CSI, dung tracking, track pack with plaster of Paris, baking in the kitchen, making pizzas in the boma, stargazing, games night, and even washing the safari vehicle! There really is a massive amount of things to do, in this brilliant Big Five setting. And the staff are happy to look after kids while the parents go on safari or slip away for some R&R.
