We focus on the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park before moving on to Zanzibar for some time on the beach. The safari is designed for the first-time traveller to the region and offers excellent value for money.

This tailor-made trip includes three of our favourite affordable properties. It starts at Lake Manze in the Selous Game Reserve and its sister property Mdonya Old River Camp in the remote corners of Ruaha National Park, before ending with Pongwe Beach Hotel, which lies on the north-east coastline of Zanzibar. Pongwe is an old favourite, while both safari camps offer some of the best value in the entire country and reliably good year-round game viewing.

Days 1–3 Selous Game Reserve

The safari starts with three nights in the Selous Game Reserve, just under a one-hour flight from Dar es Salaam. The location of Lake Manze is one of the camp's main selling points as the camp is located inside the park, in the game-rich Siwanda area, where guests have the chance to spot game from foot, boat, and standard game drives. It is one of our favourite tented camps!

Board basis and activities:
Full-board accommodation including all meals and bottled water. Standard game drives from a shared 4x4 game drive vehicle, along with walking and boating safaris, are all included in the price.

Leaving the Selous, we fly into Ruaha National Park. Flights over Southern Tanzania are nothing short of exceptional. Mdonya Old River Camp is located in the Mwagusi area of Ruaha, an area well known for its lion population and general concentrations of big game. Mdonya is a simple tented camp that was originally set up by a couple of lion researchers. It has since become a favourite for us and is one of the best-value camps in Africa.

Full-board accommodation including all meals and bottled water. Standard game drives from a shared 4x4 game are included in the price.
