This is one of our most popular family safaris, taking in some of Tanzania’s most iconic sites and featuring properties that focus on a diversity of activities for children. The trip combines Big Five game viewing and the Great Migration with the stunning Indian Ocean coastline of Zanzibar. From December through to March every year the Southern Serengeti sees the greatest build-up of predators in Africa at any time of year. This is calving time, when the great herds drop their young. We have included some excellent family-friendly properties where youngsters under 12 years are offered great rates!

This itinerary takes you to three fantastic properties – Plantation Lodge, Lemala Ndutu, and Breezes Beach Club. With a lovely location just outside the town of Karatu, Plantation Lodge is a brilliant base for checking out both Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. Lemala Ndutu is situated in the Southern Serengeti around the ndutu Plains, focusing in on the calving season at the beginning of every year. Finally, Breezes Beach Club is one of the best resorts on Zanzibar, with everything you need to end your trip in laidback beach style.

Days 3–5 Southern Serengeti

Lemala Ndutu-6983.jpg

For the next part of your trip, you will fly to the Ndutu Plains and the Southern Serengeti. Your camp for these three nights will be Lemala Ndutu, one of our favourite mobile camps. Opening up in the southern plains from December through to March, your time here will be focused on the Great Migration and especially the Serengeti’s predators. Travel in February, and you have the excellent opportunity of seeing the Great Migration calving when approximately half a million wildebeest are born in a matter of weeks. Activities focus on game drives, with a wealth of wildlife to see in addition to the vast migration herds. There is also the excellent ‘Lemala Cubs Club’, where children can go on nature walks around camp with the Maasai, as well as building their own bows and arrows for archery in front of the mess tent!

Board basis and activities:
Fully inclusive of meals, selected house alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, a laundry service, and standard game drives from a shared open-sided 4×4 game drive vehicle.
