If you’re a keen photographer with a particular interest in wild dogs, this trip is absolutely ideal for you! In the company of renowned photographer Nick Dyer, you’ll go on photo safari in the spectacular national parks of Hwange and Mana Pools.

The adventure involves three properties. All are run by African Bush Camps, a company specialising in authentic safari experiences. First up, there’s Somalisa Expeditions, a fantastic little camp standing on a small island of acacia trees within Hwange’s Somalisa Concession. Your next stop is Zambezi Expeditions, which is set up on the banks of the mighty Zambezi river within the northern region of Mana Pools N.P. Finally, you’ll stay at Nyamatusi Camp, which is also located alongside the River Zambezi, but in the east side of Mana Pools.

The focus of activities from all three properties is photographic safaris, all expertly led by Nick Dyer. An award-winning photographer and co-author of Painted Wolves: A Wild Dog’s Life, Nick is super-enthusiastic about wild dog and their conservation. During your time in Hwange, you’ll also visit the park’s Painted Dog Conservation project, as well as enjoying vehicle and walking safaris. Walks are a highlight of your stay in Mana Pools too, with more drives available from Nyamatusi and canoeing safaris offered at Zambezi Expeditions.

Days 1-3 Hwange National Park

On Day 1 of your trip, you’ll touch down at Victoria Falls Airport and transfer by road to Somalisa Expeditions (3 hrs 30 mins approx.). This classic camp provides an exciting start to your time in Zimbabwe! Its communal lounge and dining areas are set up in a mess tent, featuring a long table where everyone eats together. The camp has a deck too, complete with fire-pit and amazing vistas over a popular waterhole. There are six Meru-style guest tents, each with comfortable double bedroom, en-suite facilities including hot bucket shower, and private veranda for more breathtaking views. From here, you’ll begin your safari with Nick Dyer, walking through Hwange in search of wild dog. Expertly guided game drives are available as well, showcasing the park’s big cats, huge herds of elephant, and numerous other predators and herbivores. You’ll also visit the Painted Dog Conservation project, to learn all about ongoing endeavours to protect this species.

Days 4-6 Mana Pools National Park

On the fourth day, you’ll transfer to Manga Airstrip and fly to Mana Main Airstrip (2 hrs 10 mins approx.). From here, you’ll transfer by road to Zambezi Expeditions. This is another high-quality classic camp, with a mess tent for its lounge/dining spaces and a convivial campfire! In common with Somalisa, the guest tents are Meru style. Each includes a pleasant twin bedroom, al fresco hot bucket shower, and outside seating area. The camp provides a great base from which to head out on Nick Dyer’s photo safaris, in addition to walks and canoeing excursions. As well as wild dog, Mana Pools is home to impressive populations of elephant and buffalo, big cats, various smaller herbivores, and over 350 species of bird, not least the mysterious Pel’s fishing owl! And while aboard a canoe, you’ll enjoy sightings of crocs, hippos, and abundant waterbirds.

Days 7-9 Mana Pools National Park

Come Day 7, you’ll transfer from Zambezi Expeditions to Nyamatusi Camp by way of a game drive. This camp has a two-storey timber-and-thatch lodge, housing its lounge and dining areas. There’s a deck on both levels, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing! From the lower level, guests can access the well-appointed fire-pit. Guest accommodation consists of six tented suites, also set out on two levels and offering a double or twin bedroom, separate seating area, and smart en-suite facilities. Each site has a private deck too, with inviting plunge pool! Photo safaris with Nick Dyer will be the main activity again, but vehicle and walking safaris are also available. Walks are highly recommended for anyone interested in taking a close look at the plants, insects, and birds of Mana Pools, keeping an eye open for dogs all the while. The Nyamatusi Concession within the park boasts its own pack. Known as the Nyamatusi Pack, this pack featured in the BBC’s Dynasties series!

On the last day of your trip, you’ll return to Mana Main Airstrip and fly to Harare Airport (1 hr 30 mins approx.) in time for your flight/s home.
