After your night at Karen Gables, you’ll transfer privately to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport and fly out to Lewa Downs Airstrip (1 hr), before a shared transfer to Borana Lodge. Family owned and hosted, this is a friendly ranch property on the wildlife-rich Laikipia plateau. Its communal spaces occupy two separate sites, one on each side of a hill, with one site overlooking a busy waterhole! You’ll find the lodge’s swimming pool here too, in addition to rustic lounge and dining areas. The other site is English country meets authentic Africa, with a very homely vibe. Your sleeping quarters during your stay will be one of eight charming cottages, set well apart from its neighbours within Borana’s grounds and offering en-suite full bathroom plus veranda with spectacular views. There’s a great range of activities, and while exploring the area you can look out for such species as lion, cheetah, elephant, zebra, and black rhino – birdlife is prolific too.

The next stop on your tour is the Maasai Mara National Reserve. On Day 5, you’ll return to Lewa Downs Airstrip via shared transfer and fly to Maasai Mara Ol Kiombo (1 hr 45 mins), before another shared transfer to Naibor Camp. This is a luxurious property, with a super-comfortable mess tent for its communal lounge and dining areas. One highlight of spending time in the mess tent is looking out for hippo in a nearby pod! There’s a spa tent too. You’ll stay in one of seven tents, which boasts a smart en-suite shower room and a nicely shaded private veranda. Activities from Naibor focus on wildlife viewing, especially during the months from July to October – this is when the huge herds of the Great Migration push up into the Mara region from Tanzania in their search for food. Just 2 kilometres from camp, the Talek river meets the River Mara, renowned for dramatic crossings! But the reserve is a dream destination for safarists all year round, with all Big Five in residence as well as numerous smaller mammals and ample birdlife. Cultural experiences are also offered here.

Each of the six guest tents is classic too, with comfy wood-framed bed, separate seating area, and en-suite washroom featuring bucket shower! Your final days in the Mara region will be spent enjoying expertly guided game drives, game walks, and perhaps a hot air balloon ride (at extra cost). And if you’re interested in culture, you could visit the local Maa Trust, to meet local women and learn about their beautiful beadwork.

Board basis and activities:
Game-package basis, including all food, drinks, and shared scheduled safari activities. Days are designed by the guides when you arrive in the camp, with standard game drives and guided walks included in the price.
