Group safaris with friends or extended family are often the most enjoyable trips our clients ever do! This safari to the Maasai Mara and the Kenyan coast is a favourite due to its excellent value and guarantee of first-class game viewing.

This trip involves not only some exceptionally good game viewing, but a beach break too! It starts in the famous Maasai Mara National Reserve, before moving into the Mara North Conservancy – both areas contain a wealth of wildlife. Finally, we fly you out to Diani Beach for a little post-safari relaxation and the opportunity to enjoy a great range of watersports. Altogether, it’s a brilliant bush-and-beach combo!

The adventure begins at Ololo Safari Lodge, a comfortable farmhouse close to Nairobi National Park. Next, you will fly to Governors’ Camp. This is one of the oldest camps in the Maasai Mara and it has an excellent reputation. It is the location of the BBC programme Big Cat Diary! After a night here, you will head out to the Mara North Conservancy, to the classic Kicheche Mara Camp. And finally, you will fly to WaterLovers Beach Resort, which is situated right on the coast in Diani.

Days 2–3

On Day 2, you will fly to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, to stay at Governors’ Camp. One of the oldest camps in the entire Reserve, Governors’ has a first-rate reputation not least because it was the location of the BBC’s Big Cat Diary, which ran from 1996 to 2008! It is large and full of character, with a fabulous location along the banks of the River Mara. The lounge and dining areas are housed in an enormous marquee and there is a separate bar tent close to the river. Guest accommodation consists of 37 tents, all a good size and kitted out with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Unsurprisingly, activities from Governors’ focus on viewing the Great Migration, with two game drives available daily and hot air balloon rides departing before dawn from Little Governors’, a sister camp. You can also visit the Maasai homestead of Mara Rianda, which is just a short distance from the Reserve.

Days 4–6

The bush element of your trip continues with a couple of nights at Kicheche Mara Camp, in the Mara North Conservancy – you will drive here from Governors’ Camp. Kicheche Mara is a classic camp, located above the banks of the Olare Orok stream and amidst iconic flat-topped thorn trees. It has one tent for lounging and another for dining – the former features well-cushioned wood-framed seating, while the latter includes a large table for communal meals and a bar for relaxing at the end of an action-packed day! The property’s eight guest tents have lovely views of the stream and surrounding woodland from a private veranda apiece. Inside, the furnishings are comfortable and the down-to-earth feel of the camp is enhanced by a palette of mostly natural colours. En-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, washbasin, and bucket shower. The Mara North Conservancy boasts all of the Big Five, in addition to plenty of other predators and plains game! Kicheche Mara offers great game drives, as well as walking safaris, village visits, hikes out to a fly camp, balloon rides, and excursions to the local rhino sanctuary.

Days 7–10

Now it’s time to fly to Diani Beach for your beach break! You will stay at WaterLovers Beach Resort, which is very pleasantly positioned overlooking a blue lagoon and surrounded by swaying palm trees. All buildings are constructed from local wood, stone, and thatch, for that ultimate laidback beach feel. The interiors include a lounge, restaurant, and bar, all decorated in a style termed ‘Afro-chic’, a fusion of Sardinia and the Caribbean. There are additional spaces for relaxing outside the main lodge – and you can also enjoy a cooling dip in the Resort’s fantastic turtle-shaped infinity pool! There are eight spacious suites, all very well appointed and featuring amenities such as air conditioning, a fan, a safe, and an audio station. When it comes to activities, WaterLovers offers windsurfing, kitesurfing, fishing, and diving from its own beach house. You can also hire bikes and cycle around the area, take a dhow trip to Wasini Island and Kiste Marine Park, and play a few rounds of golf at the local Leisure Lodge Golf Club. Alternatively, you can simply lie back on the beach and enjoy the sun, during the last part of your holiday.

Board basis and activities:

Bed-and-breakfast accommodation, including complimentary Wi-Fi and SIM card.
