This family trip to Kenya combines the activities and adventures available on the Laikipia plateau and in the wildlife-rich Maasai Mara! You’ll stay at camps that are particularly well suited to children.

During the first part of your trip, you’ll stay at Laikipia’s El Karama Lodge. This family-friendly property is situated on a working cattle ranch, north of the Ol Pejeta region. Youngsters of all ages are welcome, and the owners actually live on the ranch with their own children! After your time in Laikipia, you’ll head to Speke’s Camp, located in the Mara North Conservancy. This is a simple outdoorsy sort of property from which to explore the Mara region.

El Karama offers classic vehicle and walking safaris, in addition to ranch tours, a selection of sports, and children’s activities. This part of Laikipia is home to four of the Big Five, numerous smaller mammals, and ample birdlife! Mara North is also a dream destination for safarists. You’ll enjoy game drives and walks here too. And if you visit during the months from July to October, you can look out for the huge herds of the Great Migration, with plenty of predators in their wake.

Days 1–3 Laikipia

On Day 1 of your holiday, you’ll touch down at Nairobi’s international airport, receiving a VIP Meet and Greet. From here, you’ll transfer to Wilson Airport, then you’ll fly out to Nanyuki Airstrip (1 hr) before a shared transfer to El Karama Lodge. This eco-property features very comfortable lounge and dining areas, and within its grounds you’ll find an eco-smart swimming pool! You’ll stay in the Hobbit House, a charming cottage with master bedroom, two treehouse-style floors for single beds, spacious living area, and large bathroom. The children’s sleeping areas are accessed via staircases made out of twisted deadwood! El Karama is a characterful base for your time in Laikipia. Among the activities available here are vehicle and walking safaris, ranch tours, fly camping, various sports on site, and lots of things for children to enjoy, such as making tracks using plaster casts, sculpting with termite clay, and fishing with hand lines!

Full-board accommodation, including all meals and bush meals; all house drinks; a guide and shared vehicle for game drives, night drives (shared), and other activities (unlimited); accompanied walking activities including ranger and wildlife monitoring; adventure fly camping in tree tents; farm, boma, and garden visits; specialised children’s activities; volleyball, fitness, and jogging at the ranch track; and transfers between the lodge and Nanyuki Airstrip.

Days 4–7 Maasai Mara National Reserve

After your time at El Karama, you’ll return to Nanyuki Airstrip via shared road transfer and fly to the Maasai Mara’s Musiara Airstrip (1 hr 45 mins). From here, you’ll have a private road transfer to Speke’s Camp. This amazing-value property includes an authentic mess tent, containing a cosy lounge and a cheerful dining area. Guests often relax outside too, on comfy furniture positioned to provide the most spectacular views over the Olare Orok stream! Your accommodation will consist of a spacious safari tent, featuring well-appointed washroom and private veranda complete with deckchairs. While you’re at Speke’s you can go on expertly guided game drives in your own vehicle, to have fun spotting the Mara region’s wealth of wildlife. It’s particularly impressive from July to October, when the Great Migration wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles push up into Kenya from Tanzania in their quest to find food. But there’s lots to see in January/February too.
