Botswana Family Safari Holidays

Botswana is in Africa’s malaria belt and we do not recommend that young children should travel to this country. However, for families with children aged over six, Botswana is a superb safari destination.

One major attraction is the huge range of safari activities on offer for families. Botswana is most famous for its private reserves, huge areas where guests have access to a wide range of activities – game drives at day and at night, as well as fishing, boating and mokoro (dug-out canoes).

1. Our favourite camps and lodges for family safari holidays in Botswana

A number of these reserves have specific family rooms in their camps. Here are our favourites, in order of preference: Little Vumbura, Savuti Camp, Vumbura Plains, Chitabe Lediba, Jao Camp and Duma Tau. &Beyond’s Sandibe and Nxabega also offer great activities for kids. Kwando have family rooms at Nxai Pan, Tau Pan, Lagoon and Lebala. There are also some excellent cultural activities on offer in Botswana, with children able to track game with the San Bushmen or simply to visit local villages throughout the country. Camp Kalahari and San Camp are especially good for this.

2. Family-friendly adventures to Botswana and Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is very close by too, home to a range of superb activities for kids such as lion walking, elephant rides, white water rafting and bungee jumping. Parents can leave the children to it, choosing to relax in some lovely lodges! The Royal Livingstone, Sindabezi and The River Club are our favourites for families in this region. All Botswana’s main game-viewing areas are linked also by flight, which dramatically reduces the time travellers spend in transit. This is a huge bonus over some of Africa’s driving safari destinations, where hours can be spent getting between reserves.

3. Top tips for a family safari holiday to Botswana

The only issue with Botswana as a family destination is that it is usually rather a costly choice! Travelling through the country with a family can be hugely expensive. On this point, it is also worth mentioning that if you want to include a beach destination, not only do you have to spend a dead night in Johannesburg before you get to the beach, but the inter-country flying is very pricey, only adding to the expense! Botswana is Africa’s most expensive safari destination and we recommend East Africa as a much more affordable prospect for safari holidays for families and beach trips.
