The Big Cats of Moremi Game Reserve

  • Moremi Game Reserve sits at the heart of the Delta.
  • Arguably the ‘predator capital’ of Africa.
  • Massive lion prides and very good leopard.

The success of many first safaris depends on interactions with big cats. We are often asked where the best place is in Africa to see the largest prides, and where we can guarantee superb cat sightings. If there was an answer, this would be it!

Although the Serengeti would stake a convincing claim for the best cat concentrations, Moremi Game Reserve may be our pick for Africa’s predator capital – great sightings happen in the private reserves of Botswana’s pristine wilderness areas.

The Reserve forms a huge land mass in the centre of the famous Okavango Delta. This area is the thumping heart of Botswana, home to very high standards of game viewing as well as some of Africa’s finest safari camps.

Moremi is a public national park, its central area made up of Chief’s Island, which is surrounded on almost all sides by the flood waters of the Okavango Delta. Chief’s Island is considered one of the best places to view the Big Five – lion and leopard are especially prevalent here.

The area we pick as the most cat-tastic within this predator capital of Africa is the far north-west of Chief’s Island – a land mass known locally as the Mombo Concession. Cut off by water, therefore unreachable other than by flight, Mombo is an area of incredible natural beauty and exceptionally fertile grazing grounds. The result is a mass of game and a huge concentration of predators.

There are only three camps up here. The first, Chief’s Camp, run by the luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent, is a first-class safari lodge boasting great game. However, the remaining two camps, Little Mombo Camp  and Mombo Camp are truly world class, regarded by many as the finest camps in Africa.
