"Shinde is a real favourite in the office here. Botswana's prices can be eye watering, but this camp is stunning, the game-viewing area superb, and the price reasonable. If you are looking for genuine good value for an Okavango private reserve then look no further than Shinde."

OVERVIEW:

Shinde is owned and run by Ker & Downey Botswana. This company is notable for providing superb safaris while conserving the local wildlife. Among the high-quality properties listed in the Ker & Downey portfolio are Kanana (Okavango Delta) and Okuti (Moremi Game Reserve). Accommodation at Shinde and Shinde Enclave is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, and a laundry service. Both camps are open all year round. Usually the minimum age requirement is 11 years for the main camp and 7 years for the enclave.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camps are accessed via 5 minutes’ road transfer from the local airstrip. The Shinde site is located on an island in the northern region of the Okavango Delta, on the edge of Shinde Lagoon.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SHINDE CAMP:

There are eight guest tents, five belonging to the main camp and the remaining three to Shinde Enclave. The former selection is positioned in the shade of trees and raised above ground level on wooden decking. A short flight of steps leads up onto each deck, where you’ll find comfortable seating, a table, and beautiful views over open plains! Entering the tent through sliding doors, you’ll note a double bed or twin beds with mosquito netting, bedside tables and lighting, a couple of leather storage trunks, other storage furniture, and a ceiling fan. There’s a seating area too, typically with two well-cushioned winged armchairs and a table or stand for drinks. The highly polished teak floor is adorned with a Persian rug, adding a touch of luxury! En-suite facilities are accessed through another door to one side of the bedroom space, and they comprise flush toilet, twin washbasins, and walk-in shower. The camp is able to accommodate disabled travellers, depending on specific requirements. Shinde Enclave’s three tents offer alternative views, specifically over the waterways surrounding the island, but otherwise they are the same as the main camp’s tents.

The communal lodge forming part of Shinde’s main camp is approached from the guest tents along well-marked sandy pathways. It’s a multi-tiered structure under canvas, in the cool shade of ebony and mangosteen trees. Interiors include a lounge, featuring plush sofas and even a chaise longue around a coffee table, elegant lighting, an assortment of books, and a few board games too. On a higher level, you’ll find the dining area, furnished with a long table where everyone eats together and benefiting from breathtaking vistas over the permanent waters of the North Delta! Guests can also enjoy snacks and drinks al fresco on any of the lodge’s decks, all the while looking out for wildlife. The lounge and dining spaces at Shinde Enclave are similarly presented, and both camps have a fire-pit too. The Enclave benefits from a team of private staff, consisting of chef, waiter, and housekeeper. And all guests can make use of the site’s swimming pool! Surrounded by inviting sunloungers and parasols, this is the perfect place to cool off in between adventures into the Okavango.

ACTIVITIES AT SHINDE CAMP:

Due to Shinde’s location, the camp and Enclave are able to offer both land- and water-based activities throughout the year:

  •  Expertly guided game drives

    - The camps are situated within a private concession, making for exclusive experiences of the North Delta. This very scenic region includes floodplains, woodlands, and waterways, and it’s home to a real wealth of wildlife! Drives take place during the mornings and late afternoons. Among the wildlife highlights here are four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. You can also look out for smaller predators such as cheetah, hyena, jackal, and wild dog, in addition to plenty of plains game and hundreds of birds.
  • Night drives

    - This activity is also accompanied by a knowledgeable guide. A spotlight is used to search out a number of nocturnal species, not least aardvark, aardwolf, porcupine, and the delightful pangolin!
  • Walking safaris

    - Shinde’s guides also lead walks within the concession. These are highly recommended for anyone interested in getting to know the smaller life forms, in the shape of plants, insects, and birdlife.
  • Motorboat trips

    - You can have a lot of fun exploring the North Delta’s waterways aboard a motorboat! Wildlife sightings can include elephant, hippo, and a lot of waterbirds.
  • Mokoro excursions

    - Boarding a mokoro, a dug-out canoe, is one of our favourite things to do in the Delta! As the mokoro doesn’t have a motor, you can focus your attention on the sounds as well as the sights of the wildlife.
  •  Fishing

    - Shinde supplies basic equipment for you to fish for the likes of tigerfish and tilapia. This activity is available from March to December every year.
  •  Children’s activities

    - It’s possible for kids to participate in the Young Explorers programme offered by Ker & Downey. This must be arranged before your stay. Youngsters can get involved in identifying tracks, firing bows-and-arrows, and much more besides!
  • Helicopter trips

    - Bookable as an additional charge, helicopter flights are another wonderful way of experiencing the Delta from on high.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
