“One of my all-time favourite properties. Sitting out on the decking here and seeing the elephants walk over the hill to the waterhole is truly special. An utterly brilliant setting.”

OVERVIEW:

Savute Safari Lodge offers good value along with a very enjoyable safari experience in the Savute area! Cultural experiences are available too.

Savute Safari Lodge is owned and run by Desert & Delta Safaris. The company sports an impressive portfolio of safari camps and lodges across Botswana and one in Namibia’s Caprivi Strip. Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, scheduled safari activities, and park entrance fees. The lodge is closed in February each year but opens in January and March–December.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The lodge is usually accessed via 20 minutes’ road transfer from the local airstrip. It’s situated along the banks of the Stolen River, which forms part of the Savute Channel within Chobe National Park.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SAVUTE SAFARI LODGE:

Guest accommodation consists of 12 chalets, including one family chalet. All are positioned on the riverbanks, amidst tall trees, and each is raised on wooden decking to maximise vistas across the water. Entering a standard-size chalet, you’ll find a double bed or twin beds with mosquito nets, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk cum vanity table and chair, a pleasant seating area, and ample storage space. Additional in-room amenities include fans, 220V multi-adaptor plugs for charging your electrical equipment, a tea-and-coffee station, a safe, and a hairdryer. There are a few essential items too, such as a flashlight, an umbrella, and an air horn for emergency use. The en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, large washbasin with mirror over, and walk-in shower. Soap and shower gel are supplied. And every chalet has glass sliding doors onto a private viewing deck, a great spot for relaxing and enjoying river views! The family chalet offers an extra bedroom. Overall, the accommodation is very modern, featuring clean lines, a neutral palette, and patterned rugs. It really is very stylish, and smart too.

Many of the communal spaces at Savute Safari Lodge are housed in an attractive two-storey building made out of timber and thatch. They include the main lounge, which features comfortable seating around coffee tables, a cosy fireplace, a selection of reading material, and an interesting medley of wildlife and other sculptures. The bar occupies a corner of this living area, and it’s well stocked with soft drinks and alcoholic options alike. The lodge has a library too, complete with guest laptop and basic internet connection. Dining is available at a range of indoor and al fresco locations, such as the fairly formal dining room and the dining deck – the latter offers amazing vistas over the river and of a nearby waterhole too! There’s also a curio shop, where guests can browse for souvenirs. The lodge’s campfire is regularly set up on the riverbanks, and the viewing deck provides yet another fabulous location for marvelling at the scenery and local wildlife. Finally, the swimming pool occupies its own deck not far from the main building – surrounded by sunloungers and boasting beautiful views, it’s fantastic for relaxing in between activities here.

ACTIVITIES AT SAVUTE SAFARI LODGE:

The lodge offers both safari and cultural activities:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    – Chobe National Park’s Savute region, also known as the Savute Marsh, is famous for its wealth of wildlife! The belief is that tectonic plate movements cause the channel to flood and then dry up. However, there are also theories that water levels depend primarily on the rainfall in the Angolan highlands, which also feeds the Okavango Delta. As we write this, the channel is not flowing, but do check with your safari specialist to find out whether it’s flowing again. The area around the marsh is made up of wide savanna and dense mopane woodland, attracting a great range of predators and herbivores. Drives from the lodge focus on sightings of four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo – as well as cheetah, hyena, wild dog, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and antelopes. And if you visit during November–December or February–April, you can look out for the annual zebra migration, as hundreds of zebras move in from other parts of North Botswana. It’s a spectacular sight! Birding is great too, as the Savute is home to over 450 bird species, among them kori bustard, secretary bird, and red-billed francolin.
  • Cultural experiences

    – Not far from Savute Safari Lodge, a small hilly outcrop emerges from the otherwise flat bushscape. This dolomite mound is known as Gubatsa Hills, and it houses some fascinating San rock paintings, estimated at over 1,500 years old! Archaeologists believe that the San people used plant juice, snake venom, and blood to create their depictions of elephant, giraffe, eland, and sable. The hills are well worth a visit!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
