"Owned by the safari-focused Kwando Safaris, Nxai Pan is the only camp inside the reserve. People always ask us, ‘Why go to Nxai?' The answer is, to visit a place that few people visit… and to be rewarded with dark-maned lions, brown hyena, and a genuine sense of wilderness. A wonderful place, but a simpler camp than you might expect."

OVERVIEW:

Nxai Pan is the only permanent camp inside the Nxai Pan Park boundary. It’s run by Kwando Safaris, who are famous for their camps in the game-rich area of northern Botswana – Lebala, Lagoon, Kwara and Little Kwara.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Nxai Pan Camp is located within Botswana’s Nxai Pan National Park, just north of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT NXAI PAN CAMP:

The entire camp is raised on decking, with connecting wooden walkways that link up the buildings. The large main area is open fronted, with great views over both the Pan itself and the permanent watering hole that attracts a variety of game. There’s also a small pool.

The nine spacious and very comfortable rooms have thatch roofs and solid insulated walls so that they stay cool in summer and warm in winter, particularly important as the temperature fluctuates so much in the Kalahari. All have ceiling fans, outside showers and a viewing deck.

ACTIVITIES AT NXAI PAN CAMP:

  • Nxai Pan is a seasonal game camp, with the best game viewing between November and April, Botswana’s summer. At this time there is rain, so large numbers of animals migrate to Nxai Pan from the Chobe and the Okavango to make use of the fresh grazing – vast herds of zebra are common.
  • However, game viewing is unreliable through the rest of the year, as the area becomes very dry in startling contrast to the waters in the Okavango Delta. The migratory herds move away during this time in search of better grazing. It’s worth mentioning also that, due to National Park regulations, you cannot drive off road.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
