"With some of the finest views of any safari camp I know, Muchenje has a loyal following. The location, outside Chobe itself, also offers night safaris and walking, making Muchenje a great option for making the best out of the park."

OVERVIEW:

Muchenje Safari Lodge is privately owned and run. If you’re looking for luxury accommodation in the Chobe region, this is not the lodge for you. But if your priorities are value for money and exceptionally good game viewing, Muchenje is ideal! Visiting the lodge is also a clever option for travellers seeking to avoid the crowds attracted to Chobe’s well-known riverfront. Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, all local drinks, all safari activities, transfers between the lodge and Kasane Airport, Wi-Fi, and a laundry service. Please note, village visits are available to guests staying for a minimum of three nights. The lodge is open all year round.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The lodge is accessed via approximately an hour’s road transfer from Kasane Airport. It’s situated on an escarpment within the Chobe Forest Reserve, to the west of Chobe National Park.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT MUCHENJE SAFARI LODGE:

There are 11 guest cottages, including a two-bedroom cottage that’s suitable for a family or group. All are made out of timber and thatch. A neat little path leads to a front veranda, which offers a couple of chairs, a small table, and amazing views over seasonal floodplains, the River Chobe, and the Caprivi Strip! Entering a standard-size cottage through sliding doors, you’ll find the bedroom space, which features a double bed or twin beds with mosquito netting, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk and chair, a wardrobe, and, adjacent to windows, a pleasant seating area. Additional amenities include air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a tea-and-coffee station, and a mini-bar. Finally, the en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, patterned twin washbasins, and shower. The larger cottage offers two en-suite bedrooms, the second bedroom consisting of twin beds in a loft space. And the washroom of the master bedroom boasts a big bathtub!

The communal facilities at Muchenje Safari Lodge centre on a timber-and-thatch split-level building with canvas walls. The walls can be rolled up, allowing fresh breezes to pass through. Within this structure, there’s the comfortable lounge, featuring well-cushioned sofas and armchairs around a coffee table. The lodge’s bar is positioned conveniently close by. Next to these spaces is the dining area, where guests are invited to eat together. This is usually the setting for hearty breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, although private dining can be organised on request. The shop stocks a good range of curio items and reading material. The fire-pit provides an adventurous venue for gatherings, with guests keen to share stories of their time on safari! Amazing vistas across the Chobe area can be enjoyed on the viewing deck, and the swimming pool is perfect for cooling off in between trips into the forest and the national park.

*Please be aware that the swimming pool here has no depth markings, so take care before you jump in!*

ACTIVITIES AT MUCHENJE SAFARI LODGE:

Muchenje provides an excellent assortment of activities, as follows:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - These take place within the western region of Chobe National Park, with half- and full-day excursions available. The area is characterised by sprawling plains, broadleaf woodlands, riverine forest, and of course the Chobe river itself, and other water sources. The park is famous for its immense concentrations of elephant! However, other wildlife highlights abound here, not least lion, buffalo, spotted hyena, hippo, giraffe, blue wildebeest, zebra, and vervet monkey. And there are over 450 species of bird, including fish eagle, herons, and bee-eaters.
  • Night drives

    - This activity is offered in the Chobe Forest Reserve. Also enjoyed in the presence of a knowledgeable and experienced guide, drives after dark provide exciting opportunities to search for the area’s nocturnal species – wildcat, honey badger, and bush babies!
  • Walking safaris

    - Another forest thrill, walks focus on getting to know the smaller life-forms in the region. Your guide will introduce you to all sorts of plants and insects, as well as the local birdlife.
  • Boat trips

    - All aboard the lodge’s motorboat, for cruises up and down the Chobe river. You can look out for elephant, hippo, and a wealth of waterbirds!
  • Community visits

    - Guests staying at least three nights at Muchenje can enjoy a trip to the nearest village. Here, you’ll learn about the local people’s ways of life, in a fascinating cultural add-on to your safari.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
