"Small, personal, and often taken over by small groups, Wilderness Little Mombo is located in exactly the same location as Wilderness Mombo itself. Guaranteeing exceptional game viewing year round sees the Wilderness Mombo camps as two of Africa’s most famous properties. Seriously expensive!"

OVERVIEW:

Wilderness Little Mombo is owned and run by Wilderness. Launched in Botswana in 1983, this company aims to provide thrilling safari experiences while benefiting local peoples and wildlife. The camp is a smaller version of neighbouring Wilderness Mombo, and is without doubt one of Africa’s Top Three properties! The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, twice-daily scheduled safari activities, park fees, and a laundry service. Families with children aged 6–12 years are requested to book a private vehicle for game drives, and youngsters aged 6–16 years are asked to share accommodation with at least one adult.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is accessed via 20 minutes’ road transfer from the local airstrip. It’s situated within the private Mombo Concession, on the north-west tip of Chief’s Island within the Moremi Game Reserve.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT WILDERNESS LITTLE MOMBO:

The camp is raised on high timber decking, with walkways linking the communal structures with the guest accommodation. There are just four tents, all spaced well apart and each with its own stretch of deck at the front. This space includes a lovely sala, or thatch-roof lounge. From here, you can relax and enjoy your views over floodplains, with local wildlife sometimes approaching as close as the ground directly below you! Overhead, jackalberry and sausage trees provide a pleasant bower. Due to the layout of each tent, breathtaking vistas are also offered from the bedroom. This area contains not only the comfy double bed, but also bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk and chair, a chest of drawers, and a settee with footstool. On the desk, there are a few wildlife magazines, as well as a selection of water and spirits. Guests access the washroom through a separate space featuring a wardrobe that resembles an old explorer’s chest! This interesting piece of furniture houses an electronic safe and a few essential items. Once in the washroom, you’ll find a flush toilet, twin washbasins with mirrors over, and a double shower. There’s an outside shower too, and the camp provides free toiletries and use of towels.

The communal spaces at Wilderness Little Mombo include lovely lounge and dining areas, which occupy an open-sided thatch-roof building. The lounge contains plenty of comfortable seating around coffee tables, surrounded by some intriguing artefacts. In the dining area, chic little tables and upright chairs are laid out ready for delicious meals. Guests can also dine on an area of unsheltered decking closer to the floodplains, or within the camp’s boma. Breakfasts usually involve a good selection of cereals, toast, and fruit, and if you’re in camp for brunch you can tuck in to some seriously tasty salads! Scrumptious afternoon teas are offered too, and dinners are a lavish three courses. One night per week, guests can pop across to neighbouring Wilderness Mombo for an extra-special meal featuring traditional fare. You can make use of the larger property’s gym and spa too, but Wilderness Little Mombo has its own fire-pit and inviting plunge pool! The pool has sunloungers set up alongside, in addition to a shady sala.

ACTIVITIES AT WILDERNESS LITTLE MOMBO:

  • The main activity at Wilderness Little Mombo is expertly guided game drives! These take place within the wildlife-rich Mombo Concession, an area covering 45,000 hectares ranging from mopane woodlands and Kalahari sands inland to riverine forests and shallow floodplains towards the water. Some of the Big Five are in residence – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. Other carnivores you can expect to see include cheetah, spotted hyena, jackals, and wild dog, while the herbivore count features giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and an impressive assortment of antelopes!
  • The birding is equally impressive, with specials such as martial eagle, pygmy goose, fulvous whistling duck, and the mysterious Pel’s fishing owl. Hide viewing is also available, providing thrilling opportunities to get really close to the concession’s regular visitors – and the hide is just 20 minutes from camp.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
