"Situated in the private Tsaro Reserve within the wider and popular Khwai Community Area, Khwai Leadwood is an intimate camp that has recently been refurbished. Previously only for exclusive use by families and groups, individual rooms can now be booked, but the camp maintains a strong family-orientated focus, with children of all ages welcome."

OVERVIEW:

Khwai Leadwood is owned and operated by African Bush Camps, a company offering excellent accommodation, authentic experiences, and superb service standards! Exclusive bookings are available for groups of at least 12 persons. The price of your stay includes accommodation, all meals, all drinks except premium imported spirits and champagne, two game-viewing activities per day, national parks fees, transfers between the camp and the nearest airstrip, and a laundry service. When sharing with two fully paying adults, children aged 7–11 years incur 50 per cent of the usual rate, while youngsters aged 6 years and younger stay for free!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The property is situated in the Tsaro Concession, within the Khwai region of Botswana. The nearest airstrip can be accessed via light-aircraft flight from Maun (30 minutes) or Kasane (1 hour), and the last part of the journey is made as a half-hour road transfer. Khwai Leadwood is a permanent camp, beautifully located amongst leadwood and sycamore trees on the banks of the River Khwai.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT KHWAI LEADWOOD:

There are six chalets – four for a maximum of two adults, and two for a family of up to two adults and two children. All chalets are classic wood, stone, and thatch buildings, with glass windows presenting spectacular vistas over the Tsaro Concession as far as the Moremi Game Reserve. Inside each standard unit, there’s a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk and chair, a lounge area, and storage space for clothes and other belongings. Additional amenities include a standing fan and a tea-and-coffee station. The en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, single or twin washbasin/s with mirror over, and walk-in shower. The two family chalets benefit from all these features, in addition to an extra sleeping space for children. And every chalet has a private veranda, perfect for relaxing and watching the wildlife wander by!

Khwai Leadwood’s communal structures are located just a short stroll from all guest chalets. All spaces occupy a spacious deck, with wooden walkways connecting them. There’s a very pleasant indoor lounge, featuring comfortable seating around a coffee table, as well as a few occasional tables and elegant overhead lighting. Next door, there’s a dining area, with a long table and smart chairs ready for everyone to eat together. This space includes the camp’s well-stocked bar! Guests can also eat out on the deck, all the while marvelling at the spectacular scenery. And there’s a fantastic fire-pit too, the fire surrounded by an almost-complete circle of campaign chairs. This is the heart of the camp – the perfect place for guests to get together and share safari stories!

ACTIVITIES AT KHWAI LEADWOOD:

The camp offers an exciting mix of safari activities and cultural excursions.

  • The scenic lagoons, pans, plains, and woods within this region of Botswana are home to a real wealth of wildlife! You can expect to see majority of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – in addition to smaller predators such as hyenas, jackals, and wild dog, plus oodles of other herbivores including giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, eland, impala, kudu, bushbuck, reedbuck, waterbuck, and the striking red lechwe.
  • Game drives, available during the morning and afternoon as well as at night, present wonderful opportunities to spot the mammals, while walking safaris and nature walks are ideal for any travellers seeking a close look at the smaller lives of the area – birds, insects, and plants. Over 400 species of birds live here, among them ostrich, fish eagle, sacred ibis, crested crane, lilac-breasted roller, and a YZ favourite – Pel’s fishing owl!
  • Water levels permitting, you can board a mokoro to explore the waterways, encountering crocs and hippos. And village visits are also available, highly recommended for anyone interested in the culture of Safari Africa as well as all its wildlife!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
