OVERVIEW:
Belmond Eagle Island Lodge is larger and more imposing than many other camps and lodges in the Delta. In some ways it is more like a hotel than a lodge, with extra touches like a mini bar, an internal phone system and air conditioning. While this may appeal to some people, it is definitely not a place for anyone looking for an authentic safari in a camp that blends in with the landscape.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
It is situated on the remote Xaxaba Island in the south-east of the Okavango Delta. It, along with its sister lodges, Belmond Khwai River Lodge and Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT BELMOND EAGLE ISLAND LODGE:
The lodge sits in the shade of tall trees and overlooks a lagoon. Accommodation is in luxurious tents raised on wooden decks and with thatched roofs. They all have four-poster beds and en suite bathrooms, as well as a private deck outside where guests can enjoy the wonderful views of the surrounding lagoon and waterways. The private suite also has a plunge pool, an outdoor shower and a bath. There is a swimming pool in the main area, and an observation deck.
ACTIVITIES AT BELMOND EAGLE ISLAND LODGE:
- There is very little dry land near the lodge, so all activities tend to be water-based and concentrate on enjoying the beautiful scenery, bird-watching and fishing.
- Outings are made on motorboats and mokoros (dug-out canoes), and guests can explore other islands on foot with an armed guide.
- Game drives are possible when the water levels are low enough.
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
