Sophie's biography

When Sophie first set foot in Africa, she had booked a three-week holiday in South Africa. This very quickly became a six-month trip that involved exploring South Africa before travelling overland through Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. The final few days of this trip were spent on safari with the Bushcamp Company in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. These few days gave her an insight into the specialist safari industry; she was hooked!

Within a month of leaving Zambia, Sophie was on a flight back there. She had been offered a job as a Bush Camp Manager with the Bushcamp Company. This was the start of her career in the safari industry, which has seen her run camps in East Africa too, specifically Jongomero in Ruaha National Park for the Selous Safari Company, Alex Walker’s Serian North and finally the exceptional Alex Walker’s Serian Lamai Mobile.

Sophie has firsthand experience of the safari industry and now works as an East African and Zambia specialist at Yellow Zebra. Her experience of both sides of the industry ensures that her clients enjoy consistently well-thought-out and expertly designed safaris.

Most memorable experience

This is not an easy question to answer, but being woken in the middle of the night in Ruaha by a big male lion standing right outside my tent roaring was very special. I could feel the vibrations of the sound, which was incredible! He remained outside my tent for an hour, roaring every few minutes in response to another male lion calling from a few miles away. I will never forget the feeling of his roar – this memory will always bring a big smile to my face.

Favourite destination

I cannot choose just one, as I love both Ruaha National Park in Tanzania and the South Luangwa in Zambia. I have been lucky enough to manage camps in both locations and I loved every second of each experience. Both areas are remote and unspoilt – for me, there is no better combination. I love the feeling of being alone in the middle of nowhere!

"Sophie did a wonderful job organizing the Southern Tanzania safari. There are multiple positives to note: 1. Choice of game parks and reserve. 2. Choice of camps (both were great). 3. Safety first with local air travel. Viewing game has it's days, but I did very well at both Selous and Ruaha. I gave myself time (even though there are no guarantees) and pretty much photographed it all. Organizing with Yellow Zebra is straightforward and charges are fair and easy to pay with CC (no need to wire money or anything like that). 5-Star over all."
''I received top class advice and recommendations. Sophie instinctively read my mind and offered some brilliant options when it came to choosing my trip. All the admin and operational side was also great. Great company and great people.''
