Ro has recently returned from just under two years’ living out in the wilds of Kenya supporting Elephant Watch Camp to managing the Elephant & Bees research camp.

a snapshot

She has been following her lifelong dream of working with African elephants, which led to a role supporting Saba Douglas-Hamilton in one of Africa’s most unique and special camps, Elephant Watch Camp, in Kenya’s remote northern reserve, Samburu.

Recent Travel Experience

Ro went on her first trip to Africa after university. It was a whistle-stop tour of South Africa led by one of her closest friends, who was born and raised in the Drakensberg. After this introduction, she was hooked on the continent and has been back almost every year since. In 2017 she followed her heart and quit the rat race to take on an internship with Save the Elephants, which began her love affair with Kenya.

Ro's Biography

Ro went from being an intern at Save the Elephants to managing the Elephants & Bees research camp, just outside Tsavo East National Park, where she worked with local communities constructing beehive fences to protect their farms from crop-raiding elephants. At the same time, Ro took every opportunity to venture into the park, spending hours with some of the last big tuskers in the world, and chancing upon her first leopard sighting.

Ro went on to take up a role at Elephant Watch Camp, and her background in business led to her being a huge asset at the camp, becoming Saba Douglas-Hamilton’s right-hand woman! She spent over a year living and breathing all things eco-focused, assisting with the management and operations of the camp and the various conservation initiatives with which the camp is involved, together with Save the Elephants, intrinsically linked with Elephant Watch.

Most Memorable Experience

Having lived at Elephant Watch Camp for over a year, it is difficult to choose just one experience, but it was the elephant encounters in the camp, which many of the resident bulls treat like home, that will always be the most special to me. The sight of a huge bull elephant crossing the path of your tent, lit up by an African full moon, is something that stays with you forever. Sharing these experiences with guests of the camp, when a resident bull causes you to vacate the lunch table as he slowly ambles through, picking off acacia pods from the tortilis trees, was such a pleasure. And having elephants drop by the office, leaving me trapped on the other side of camp with nothing to do but sit on the steps and enjoy the view, was definitely the best excuse for stepping away from the desk!
