"Boasting the most exclusive address in Johannesburg, The Saxon guarantees privacy within its expansive gardens. It's the first choice for the most discerning of travellers transitting through the city to or from safari, or opting for an extended stay in this buzzing metropolis. For those with an interest in South Africa's history, the most prominent guest of the hotel to date has been Nelson Mandela, who chose this as his sanctuary while completing his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom."

OVERVIEW:

Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa is a Leading Hotel of the World! Recommended both for stopovers and longer stays, it’s ideal for travellers searching for something more special than an airport hotel or wishing to spend a little more time in Jo-burg. The property has received a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice award! Various rates are available, so please contact us to discuss your requirements. The hotel is open throughout the year.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The hotel is accessed via approximately 45 minutes’ drive from Johannesburg’s O. R. Tambo International Airport. Nestling snugly into a tree-lined street, it’s within easy reach of the renowned shopping and business hub of Sandton, Johannesburg.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT THE SAXON HOTEL:

Guests choose between hotel and villa accommodation. Both locations feature exquisitely styled options, beginning with the Luxury Suite. The hotel version offers a king-size bed, bedside tables and lighting, lounge and dining area with business desk, and shutters opening to reveal amazing vistas of the hotel’s gardens and the skyline of Jo-burg! Additional amenities include en-suite full bathroom, full mini-bar and snacks, iPod docking station, and high-speed Wi-Fi. Guests also enjoy a daily newspaper and a 24-hour private butler service. The villa version of the Luxury Suite is similarly appointed, benefiting from a private veranda with access into the gardens. The next category up is the Presidential Suite, also available in hotel or villa setting. This accommodation features entrance hall, walk-in cupboards, and butler’s kitchen, fully equipped. If you are travelling in a large party, you could consider booking an entire villa for sole use, while travellers looking for the ultimate in opulence could entertain the notion of staying in the very stately Nelson Mandela Platinum Suite, one of the most luxurious options in all Jo-burg! Nelson Mandela in fact spent six months at the hotel, preparing his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom.

Saxon’s communal spaces are also very deluxe. There are numerous lavish lounges, where guests can relax in comfort and style. The hotel also offers some fantastic restaurants and bars. These include Grei for an adventurous six-course tasting menu incorporating both local and international wines, Qunu for bold flavours within a lovely terrace setting, and Olive Bar for sophisticated sundowners and cocktails! Anyone in need of a spot of pampering can head to Saxon Spa, which has water features, outdoor stones, and tranquil gardens. Next to the hotel’s koi pond, you’ll find the fitness centre, with its full range of equipment and exercise science practitioner to put you through your paces. There are ample conference facilities too, and a suitably experienced team to coordinate meetings and so on. The gardens are ideal for a gentle stroll and there’s a highly inviting infinity pool with sunloungers alongside!

ACTIVITIES AT THE SAXON HOTEL:

Due to its wealth of on-site facilities, Saxon is really first rate for safari stopovers. However, if you opt to stay a little longer, here are a few examples of things to do in and around Johannesburg:

  • Constitution Hill

    - One of the most significant historical sites in South Africa, this hill was the location of a fort until its use as a prison from 1892 to 1983. Today there are four exhibitions, comprising not only Old Fort but also the buildings that sprang up around it over the years. There’s also an interactive play facility for children and a pleasant café.
  • Apartheid Museum

    - This museum is situated just 8 kilometres south of Jo-burg. It’s considered the best of its kind for an accurate presentation of twentieth-century Africa.
  • Soweto Township

    - Often coupled with a visit to the Apartheid Museum, a tour of the township provides fascinating insights into the history of Jo-burg.
  • Johannesburg Art Gallery

    - The city’s art gallery is found in the Central Business District, and it’s the biggest gallery on the subcontinent! Highlights include Dutch paintings of the seventeenth century, eighteenth-century British works, South African art of the nineteenth century, and an extensive contemporary collection.
  • 27 Boxes

    - Jo-burg has its fair share of shopping malls, but this is a bit different – a complex of boutiques, eateries, and galleries, all in shipping crates! You’ll have a lot of fun making your way around this attraction, found in the bohemian suburb of Melville.
  • Johannesburg Botanical Garden

    - Fabulous for keen botanists and anyone interested in landscape design, the garden occupies approximately 125 hectares within Emmarentia, another suburb. It has several distinct areas, not least the Shakespeare Garden containing all the herbs mentioned by the Bard in his various oeuvres! There’s a great restaurant too.
  • Restaurants and cafés in Johannesburg

    - Visitors to the City of Gold really are spoilt for choice when it comes to fine dining! Whether it’s local fare you’re after, or international dishes, or some exhilarating fusions, there’s something to tantalise your tastebuds. And the bars are also pretty enticing.
