"Sister property to the smaller Onsea House nearby, Machweo is probably my favourite of all the Arusha properties for service alone. Great value overall and a refreshingly professional approach to hospitality... a great option for a night or two in Arusha."

OVERVIEW:

Machweo Wellness Retreat and Fine Dining is owned and operated by the Belgian Janssens-Onsea family, who also run neighbouring property Onsea House. In common with Onsea, Machweo has a terrific Chef-Manager in Axel Janssens, one of the finest chefs in Tanzania! Service standards overall are superb, and both properties provide good value for money. Rates vary, so please contact a member of YZ to discuss the best option for you.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The property can be approached via 45 minutes’ road transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport or about half an hour’s drive from Arusha Airport. Its driveway is located on a hillside, slightly lower than Onsea House. This is a very scenic part of Arusha, and Machweo has gorgeous views over shamba farms and homesteads.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT MACHWEO HOUSE & WELLNESS RETREAT:

There are six private cottage suites and three double honeymoon suites. Featuring African art and a clean contemporary look overall, the accommodation is very stylish. Three cottages are set within Machweo’s grounds, and each contains two suites. The entrance door leads into a small hallway with access to a kitchen and a lounge with fireplace. Each bedroom has a four-poster bed with mosquito nets, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk and chair, and ample storage space. Extra amenities include flatscreen satellite television, mini-bar, tea-and-coffee station, safe, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The well-appointed en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, twin washbasins, walk-in shower, and bathtub, with toiletries supplied free of charge. Every cottage has a balcony too – this is set with dining furniture, so guests can marvel at sunsets over Mount Meru while tucking in to delicious meals! All honeymoon suites benefit from similar features. Located within the main house at Machweo, each has a few luxurious touches to ensure you have a memorable stay here.

The communal spaces at Machweo are also found in the property’s main house, a pleasant split-level building featuring brick-and-plaster walls, smart flagstones, and a cheerful red-tiled roof. Inside, you’ll find a high-ceilinged lounge with plenty of comfortable seating around coffee tables. Guests dine on the property’s spacious terrace – and many travellers come to Machweo to experience the food here! As mentioned, the Chef-Manager is Axel Janssens, who has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants and has an amazing talent for creating delicious Belgian/French cuisine. Guests enjoy continental buffet breakfasts, refreshing light lunches, bistro-style snacks, and lavish three-course dinners enhanced by well-chosen wines from the property’s bar. Anyone needing to burn off some calories after indulging their passion for fine dining can swim a few laps in Machweo’s pool! And you can pop to the spa too, for a range of massages, manis and pedis, reflexology, and sauna sessions. Please note, guests also have access to the communal facilities at Onsea House.

ACTIVITIES AT MACHWEO HOUSE & WELLNESS RETREAT:

A lot of travellers choose Machweo for a pre- or post-safari stopover, and it’s a fantastic option if you’re in need of a little rest before or after your flight.

  • But if you’re in Arusha for longer, staff are happy to book you onto all sorts of trips and tours! For example, you can travel out to some of Tanzania’s most famous safari areas, not least the national parks of Arusha, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, and Tarangire.
  • You can explore the Ngorongoro Crater too, or visit lakes Duluti, Eyasi, and Natron – and even the Monduli Mountains!
  • Hiking and climbing can also be arranged, both close to Machweo and as ambitious treks up the mounts of Meru, Kilimanjaro, and Ol Doinyo Legai.
  • Mount Meru and Lake Dulutu are highly recommended for birders, as each region contains hundreds of feathery friends!
  • Various sports are available too, such as watersports, tennis, horse riding, mountain biking, and golf.
  • Culture buffs can take walks with local people, finding out about their ways of life en route, while the most popular attractions of Arusha are easily accessed from the retreat – such as the clock tower, the National Natural History Museum, the Maasai Market, and the Cultural Heritage Centre.
